 Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Assessments

Indoor Air Quality and Your Health

According to the EPA, health effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or, possibly, years later. Immediate effects may show up after a single exposure or repeated exposures. These include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Such immediate effects are usually short-term and treatable. As far as the health effects of exposure to indoor mold, a 2004 publication by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, (Damp Indoor Spaces and Health), “nervous system effects, suppression of the immune response, hemorrhage in the mucous membranes of the intestine and respiratory tracts, rheumatoid disease, and loss of apatite have a been reported in people who work or live in buildings that have microbial growth”.

The likelihood of immediate reactions to indoor air pollutants depends on several factors. Age and preexisting medical conditions are two important influences. In other cases, whether a person reacts to a pollutant depends on individual sensitivity, which varies tremendously from person to person. Some people can become sensitized to biological pollutants after repeated exposures, and it appears that some people can become sensitized to chemical pollutants as well.

We test for the following indoor air pollutants:
  • Cat and Dog Dander
  • Arthropods (spiders, dust mites, cockroach) fragments
  • Mold, Bacteria and Endotoxins
  • Particulates
  • Volatile Organic Compounds

The use of energy efficient building materials in the 1970's, 80's and 90's has caused homes, offices and schools to become more air tight. As a consequence, more indoor air quality problems such as "Sick Building Syndrome" or "Building Related Illness" have become more prevalent.

Our IAQ Surveys are performed by degreed and certified environmental specialists with extensive experience in industrial hygiene, hazardous materials management, and building science.

The goals of the IAQ Survey are to:
  • Determine the nature and cause of the indoor pollutant(s)
  • Determine a solution to enhancing indoor air quality

We use an EPA certified laboratory to perform the analysis. Our professionals interpret the test results and provide cost specific recommendations for resolving the indoor air quality problem in the home, office or classroom.
