Heating Oil Storage Tanks Underground Oil Storage Tanks According to the US EPA definition, an underground storage tank (UST) system is a tank (or a combination of tanks)and connected piping having at least 10 percent of their combined volume underground. The tank system includes the tank, underground connected piping, underground ancillary equipment, and any containment system. Tank Removal The main benefit of removal is that the tank is gone and never needs to be discussed again. The soil surrounding the tank is excavated and the tank is removed from the ground. The excavation is then backfilled and compacted and the area over the former tank is then restored. Tank Abandonment Tank abandonment creates less physical disturbance than tank removal. An approximate 2' x 2' square hole is dug down to the top of the tank. An access hole is cut into the top of the tank and the tank is cleaned in place. The tank is then filled with an "inert" substance such as sand, dirt, concrete slurry. New Tank Installation UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK-The replacement of an old underground storage tank with a new tank is an acceptable alternative. Newly manufactured tanks are made of reinforced fiberglass or double- walled rust protected steel. ABOVEGROUND STORAGE TANK-A lot of people opt for the installation of an aboveground storage tank placed on the side of their house or in the basement. Oil in the underground tank can be transferred to the aboveground tank prior to removing or abandoning the old tank. Leaking Storage Tanks What if my tank leaked? The state regulatory agency must be notified if contamination is found during tank removal or abandonment procedures. Different states have different requirements for leaking tanks.
